SOFTSPACE RESEARCH
Studying how professional skills are defined, practiced, measured, and transferred.
Our Research Agenda
SoftSpace Academy is grounded in a structured review of the scientific literature on social behavior, professional interaction, learning, and skill development.
Our research agenda focuses on a central question:
What conditions allow professional interaction skills to be acquired, stabilized, and transferred to real-world settings?
We examine this question across three connected areas:
• how professional and social skills are defined and prioritized
• how those skills are practiced and supported
• how observable skill development transfers across contexts
Across many disciplines, soft skills are widely discussed but rarely defined in observable ways. Training often relies on lecture, reflection, or brief role-play, while less attention is given to how skills stabilize across varied conditions or carry into real professional interactions. Our research examines how professional and social skills are defined, practiced, and measured across disciplines, with the goal of identifying training conditions that support observable skill development and reliable transfer.
Evidence Base
- The SoftSpace Academy framework is built through an ongoing review of peer-reviewed research across several relevant domains. Our literature review process examines:
- • how soft skills are defined across cultures and disciplines
- • where definitions diverge or lack operational clarity
- • how professional and social skills are currently measured
- • what is known about practice, feedback, and transfer
- • where existing research leaves important gaps
- These findings guide the development of the SoftSpace skill architecture and research agenda.
Processes and Outcomes
- SoftSpace Academy's research examines the learning conditions that may support observable professional skill development.
- Key questions include:
- • What types of practice help interaction skills stabilize over time?
- • How much variation across scenarios or contexts is needed for transfer?
- • What kinds of feedback help learners adjust future responses?
- • How can skill growth be measured without relying on trait labels or impression ratings?
- This work informs the design of SoftSpace learning materials, assessment tools, and future research studies.
